Nurse Practitioners

The Georgian Bay Family Health Team employs eight nurse practitioners who work in our physicians’ offices and the Same Day Health Care Clinic.

Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioners (PHC NPs) are Registered Nurses (RNs) who are specialists in primary health care, who provide accessible, comprehensive and effective care to clients of all ages. They are experienced RNs with additional nursing education which enables them to provide individuals, families, groups and communities with health services in health promotion, disease, and injury prevention, cure, rehabilitation and support.

As a member of your health care team, NPs:

  • Diagnose and treat illnesses and/or injuries
  • Perform physical check-ups
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, and imaging
  • Provide counselling and education
  • Utilize evidence-based medicine
  • Refer clients to other health care professionals and specialists when medically appropriate
  • Prescribe medication
  • Manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, COPD and asthma
  • Offer preventative health screening tests (for example, cancer screening)
  • Work in partnership with interdisciplinary health care providers, including physicians, to provide client centred care
